Here, we present the 7 most beautiful mountain lakes around Schladming – with hiking tips and what makes each of these lakes so special.
- Spiegelsee – Reiteralm
Spiegelsee on the Reiteralm is arguably one of the most famous lakes in the region – and for good reason. When the air is still, the striking Dachstein massif is reflected in the crystal-clear water – a picture-perfect scene! The lake is located at around 1,860 meters and can be reached via a family-friendly hike from the Reiteralm mountain station in about 45 minutes. It’s also easily manageable with younger children – a perfect outing for families looking for a dream photo opportunity.
2. Riesachsee – Untertal
Riesachsee lies nestled deep between steep mountain slopes in the Untertal valley near Rohrmoos. The combination of mountain scenery, a waterfall, and a rustic hut makes this lake a truly special experience. The classic hike leads via the spectacular “Durch die Höll” alpine trail – featuring a suspension bridge and narrow paths, which is recommended for sure-footed and experienced hikers. However, there is also a family-friendly forest road that offers an easier way to reach the lake.
3. Duisitzkarsee – Obertal
Duisitzkarsee in Obertal/Rohrmoos is a real hidden gem. Tucked away in a valley basin, it feels like a small retreat. The roughly 1.5-hour ascent is manageable, though somewhat steeper in places – but no problem for active families with older children. Once at the top, a picturesque mountain lake awaits you, with places to stop for refreshments and a stunning reflection of the surrounding peaks.

From the Tuchmoar parking lot, trail no. 790 leads comfortably along a forest road to the Tuchmoaralm – an easy-to-walk path, also suitable for families who enjoy hiking. From the alpine pasture area, it’s just a few more minutes to the crystal-clear Seekarlsee. This small, quiet mountain lake is known for its intense turquoise-green color, which looks almost Caribbean in the sunshine – a real Caribbean feel in the Alps! Nestled between alpine meadows and steep rock faces, this spot invites you to sit back and enjoy.
5. Styrian Bodensee – Seewigtal
The Styrian Bodensee is a true natural jewel and, thanks to its easy access, ideal for a relaxed day trip. From the parking lot, a well-maintained path leads directly to the lake in just about 15 minutes – perfect even with children or strollers. Nestled in an impressive valley and framed by steep rock walls, a breathtaking panorama opens up. You can enjoy a lovely walk along the shore, stop for a bite at the rustic hut, or glide across the crystal-clear water in a rowing boat. A place to switch off, enjoy, and marvel – without any great effort.
6. Giglachseen – Ursprungalm
The Giglachseen are among the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in the region. They are located at over 2,000 meters above sea level and can be reached from the Ursprungalm via a well-maintained hiking trail that takes about 1.5 hours. The path is moderately difficult but also suitable for active families. The two lakes lie right next to each other, framed by rugged mountains. The play of colors in the water is particularly charming, shimmering from deep blue to emerald green depending on the light. Those who set off early will be rewarded with a wonderful morning atmosphere and an almost mystical silence.
7. Sonntagskarseen – Untertal near Schladming
The Sonntagskarseen are located high above the Untertal valley near Schladming – in the wild, pristine mountain landscape around the Preintalerhütte. These two lakes – the Lower Sonntagskarsee and the slightly higher Upper Sonntagskarsee – are among the most impressive high-alpine jewels in the region. The approach begins in the Untertal near Schladming and leads via the famous “Wilde-Wasser-Weg” (Wild Water Trail) to the Preintalerhütte – easily reachable in about 2.5 hours depending on the route and pace. The alpine part of the tour begins from the Preintalerhütte: in another 1.5 hours, a partly steep, well-marked trail leads to the Sonntagskarseen. Sure-footedness and some mountain experience are required for this section – but you will be rewarded with a breathtaking high-mountain backdrop and complete tranquility.
The lower lake is picturesquely situated in a cirque and enchants with its calm surface. The upper Sonntagskarsee is a bit wilder, nestled between rugged rocks and far away from civilization. Up here, you can feel the full power and silence of the mountains – a place for everyone who loves the true high-mountain atmosphere and isn’t afraid of adventure.
